Baby Shower Recap + Sisterlocks Hairstyle Tutorial

Baby Shower Recap + Hair Tutorial

Hey girl hey! I'm so excited to share a sneak peek into my amazing baby shower. It was a blast, filled with laughter, games, and endless love for our little princess. Seeing all my friends and family made my heart so full. This baby shower was extra special because it was a reunion! I hadn't seen many of them since either my wedding 5 years ago or since covid. It made my day to have them all in one place again. The baby shower was everything I had hoped for and more. So let's jump into some of the highlights from my epic celebration.

We flew in from Indianapolis to Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington D.C. and then we stayed in the Hilton Washington DC National Mall The Wharf. Since we are Diamond Hilton Honors members, our hotel stay was totally FREE. We use our Hilton Honors AMEX card to earn Hilton Honors Bonus Points on everyday purchases from groceries to gas, and then we redeem our points for hotel reward nights and more. I highly recommend checking it out here.

The hotel was super nice and clean, had breakfast, Starbucks, and valet parking available. It was close to the D.C. Wharf and it was close to our baby shower venue, which was also in D.C.

I did not want to have a traditional banquet style, sit-down baby shower. I wanted to do something different. More like a family cookout style but just a little fancier. So when my baby shower planner found this indoor/outdoor rooftop venue in D.C., I was obsessed! I was going for more of a day party, happy hour, mixer, cookout event and this venue was perfect for what I was envisioning.

Baby Shower Outfits

Hubby and I went for a safari/animal print look with our outfits. This pic was before we went off to the baby shower venue after I got my makeup done.

Makeup

I had my wedding makeup artist do my baby shower makeup and she slayed again. She services the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) areas (she travels).

I showed her these two inspo pictures and she made my vision come alive. She always knows how to make me look so gorgeous. I literally felt like a goddess. The rhinestones were my favorite part!

Hair

Now let's get into this hair chile. I did it myself. Super easy. I'm going to give yall a step-by-step tutorial in case you want to try it out for yourself.

How to Achieve My Baby Shower Hairstyle:

What You'll Need

Instructions

Step 1) Make a side part.

Step 2) Gather the hair on the left side of the side part. Separate out one lock near the top of the ear to keep out for the style (see picture). You can use a pipe cleaner to curl that one loc if you'd like.

Step 3) Braid or Twist the hair on the left side of the side part. But leave that one lock out. If needed, you can use a rubber band at the end to hold the braid/twist.

Step 4) Repeat step 3 for the right side of the side part. When you're done braiding/twisting each side of the side part, you should have some hair in the back left out.

Step 5) Bring both the left and right braid/twist to the back of the hair. Use bobby pins to secure them so that both braids/twists connect together. Use multiple bobby pins here.

For more help on steps 3 - 5, watch my video tutorial starting at Timestamp - 10:24 to 12:18.

Step 6) You're going to use a few locs that are left out in the back to make 4 metallic tiny braids. First cut the metallic gold string to the length of your hair. Tie the string onto the opening of a bobby pin and make a knot. Insert the bobby pin into your scalp. Then take the string and 3 locs and braid them together.

Step 7) Repeat step 6 three more times so you end up having a total of 4 tiny metallic braids throughout the hair that is left out. I spread mine out evenly so they all can be seen.

For more help on steps 6 & 7, watch my video tutorial starting at Timestamp - 6:41 to 8:46

Step 8) Add 3 gold cuffs to the front of the braids/twists. You don't need a lot but you can use as many as you want. You can also lay your edges down too, I did mine since it was a special occasion, but it is optional.

Advice for Someone Who is Planning a Baby Shower

  • Start planning early. The earlier the better. I started in April and had the event in August. So we had 4 months to plan and it felt like a good amount of time. At least 3-4 months is a good time frame to plan.
  • Hire a planner. I can plan a bomb event, but I didn't want to be stressed this time while being pregnant. So I hired a local D.C. event planner to plan my baby shower. It was money worth spent especially because I live out of town. I was able to just show up to the event and enjoy the event. My planner planned the event, assembled the vendors, executed the event the day of, and did the setup and breakdown.
  • Pick a theme and make a moodboard or a idea guide for you and your planner. This was very important for me to do to be able to convey to my planner what I was looking for. I used pinterest a ton to find ideas and also instagram. Here's my idea guide I made for my planner.
