Hey girl hey! Happy August! Wow, this year is flying by. How's August treating you so far? The first few days of my August have been a little chaotic, if you've been watching my IG stories and posts you already know why. I was in the hospital for 4 days due to some fibroid complications during my pregnancy. Thank God the baby is okay, and I'm back home now resting and managing the fibroid pain. I learned so much about fibroids and want to share some things I learned with you! Next weekend is my baby shower and I'm super pumped for it. I'll be sharing some baby shower outfit inspo and hairstyle inspo here too.
P.S. Thank you so much to everyone who prayed for us during this time. Love you!
Talk Soon,
FINDING OUT ABOUT IF YOU HAVE FIBROIDS: Although many women are well aware that they have fibroids due to the symptoms that can come with it (i.e. heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, etc.), there are a lot of us who have no clue that we even have fibroids. Mainly because fibroids can go unnoticed due to not having any major symptoms. There's a few ways you tell if you might have fibroids:
1) You found out you are pregnant and you have your first pelvic ultrasound and they tell you that you have fibroids.
2) You may have gained weight in your pelvic and abdominal area that you cannot lose. Or your pelvic and abdominal area may protrude out to wear it looks like you are pregnant but you are not.
3) You have a physical wellness exam with your primary care doctor and they notice that your pelvic and abdominal area is sticking out or is abnormally large and then they recommend you get an ultrasound to check if you have fibroids or other issues.
HOW BIG CAN FIBROIDS GET AND HOW MANY CAN YOU HAVE: Fibroids can range in size from small as a pea and up to 7lbs. Fibroids can cause pain and symptoms no matter the size and sometimes they don't cause any pain at all. You can have one fibroid or several fibroids. They can all be located in different areas of the uterus.
HOW DO FIBROIDS GROW: Fibroids grow off of blood supply. So they will grow even more especially when pregnant because they get tons of blood supply in the uterus while the baby is growing. Fibroids will grow right along with the baby. However, the fibroid can outgrow its blood supply and that can start the process of degeneration.
WHAT IS FIBROID DEGENERATION: Fibroid degeneration is when the fibroid outgrows its blood supply. Think of it as if you wrapped a rubber band around your finder tip. After a while your finger tip will start to hurt because it is no longer receiving blood. Fibroid degeneration is a extremely painful process and starts to cause the fibroid to decay and possibly shrink. Fibroid degeneration does not guarantee that the fibroid will completely shrink and disappear.
WHAT ARE OPTIONS TO REMOVE AND TREAT FIBROIDS: There is not much that can be done to remove fibroids while pregnant. It is not advised to have fibroid surgery during pregnancy, doctors advise you to wait until at least 6 weeks after you recover from labor and delivery, after your uterus has contracted back down to its regular normal size before you pursue fibroid treatment. Then if you decide to get fibroid surgery, it can take 1-2 years for you to heal before you should try to conceive again. It's definitely a journey. Also, fibroid surgery is not always the solution for everyone. They have a few less invasive options that can still help shrink the fibroid such as Acessa, or there's also fibroid embolization which cuts the fibroids blood supply off to keep it from growing, and more. So definitely explore all the treatment options.
